Jan Garbarek Group feat. Trilok Gurtu

Jan Garbarek can probably be considered one of the musicians who dictates style in European jazz. And this has been true for the past 50 years. Countless musicians have been influenced by the sound of this Norwegian saxophonist, often described as hymnodic, lyrical, vocal, ethereal, meditative, and definitely Scandinavian. Rather than resting on that, and contrary to his self-declared laziness, Jan Garbarek at age 76 still fights for new and better musical experiences, preferably live in concert: “I just try to play what I myself would like to hear,” he explains with great modesty. “If someone can empathize, then great. Any reaction is good. And no reaction is fine, too. To be honest, it doesn’t make a big difference. Let me put it this way: I am not Elvis Presley. I cannot predict or anticipate what the listener feels. But when musicians feel that they are inside the rhythm, it is an enchanting moment of pure happiness. That feeling is absolute exhilaration.” Jan Garbarek is touring with his band: German pianist and keyboardist Rainer Brüninghaus, who has been part of the group for 30 years, Brazilian bassist Yuri Daniel and Indian percussionist Trilok Gurtu.
